Jiri Levicek

Jiri Levicek was born in 1984 in Brno, Czech Republic. He began studies at the Janacek Academy of Music and Performing Arts in 1999 at the secondary school and continued at the college level receiving his Bachelor's degree in 2006.

During the course of his academic career at the Janacek Academy, he attended summer piano courses in Prague, Cesky Krumlov, Kaunas (Lithuania), "Piano Texas" in Fort Worth (USA), and played for many distinguished artists such as Robert Roux, Jose Feghali, Armen Babakhanian, Alexander Kobrin, Yoheved Kaplinsky, Herold Martina, Tomas Ungar, Zenon Fishbein, Laszlo Baranyay, Arthur Greene, Avo Kuyumjian, Walter Groppenberger and Robert McDonald. Jiri went to the University of North Texas College of Music in 2006 as an exchange student and has remained there to pursue the prestigious Artist Certificate and Master's degree. He has studied with Adam Wodnicki (classical piano), Stefan Karlsson (jazz piano) and Cindy McTee (composition). Subsequently, his work as a performer and composer has been influenced and enhanced by both the classical and jazz realms.

Jiri has participated in a number of international piano competitions and has performed widely throughout Europe and the United States. He played his first concerto with an orchestra at the age of 11, and three years later, he was invited to play Mozart Piano Concerto No. 23 with Lithuanian Philharmonics under the baton of Paul Bermann. Jiri's first performance in the USA took place at the Czech Embassy in Washington D.C.  In 2008, he played extensively with flutist James Scott both in the US and Europe, and in 2009, he gave a concert for The American Ambassador at the United States Embassy in Lima, Peru.

Among his many awards, he was recognized in 1997 in Kosice, Slovak Republic for the best performance of music of the Slovak composer, Eugen Suchon. In 2000, he took 2nd place in the international piano competition Pro Bohemia in Ostrava, Czech Republic.  A year later, he took 1st place in the international piano competition for the Leos Janacek Award where he was recognized for the best performance of Leos Janacek's music. From 2006 to the present, he has been selected for 1st place honors in the Phillips International Jazz Piano Competition, awarded 3rd prize in the Corpus Christi International Competition, chosen as one of four finalists in the Louisville Symphony Competition and received the Outstanding Musicianship Award in the classical piano performance field at the University of North Texas. Recently, Jiri received a commission from the Czech National Philharmonics to write a Piano Concerto.
