President's Letter
Janie Delaney for 2009-10 Program

During the spring of 1949, ten San Angeloans with a passionate love of classical music gathered with dreams of creating a local symphony.  They asked Austrian-born conductor Dr. Eric Sorantin of the San Antonio Symphony to conduct the 1949-50 season of three concerts, and on Monday, November 14, 1949, the San Angelo Symphony presented its opening concert in the Municipal Auditorium.

Without the vision, generous gifts and hard work of these individuals and others who have followed, the outstanding music we enjoy today would not be possible.  Thus, it is only fitting to celebrate this 60th anniversary with a star-studded diamond season.

The opening concert glitters to the music of Rachmaninoff performed by former Sorantin winner Fred Moyer.  The season climaxes at the Wells Fargo Family Pops Concert with the internationally famous Mariachi Vargas.

At Christmas, a duo of concerts will be back by popular demand.  We hope to see the City Auditorium filled with families and children of all ages at the 3 p.m. Saturday matinee.  Others may choose the 8 p.m. occasion.  Look for a traditional perfromance which harkens back to the old-fashioned Christmas of yesteryear.

But just to make sure our 60th year reflects a season to remember, "Seven Elegant Evenings" are lined-up to entice your senses.  Maestro Hector Guzman will showcase his own talents when he performs favorite selections on the organ, while a 100-year-old historical mansion will be center stage for the Holiday season's biggest party of the year.  A complete listing of these glittering events is printed within this program.  Plan to attend several or all.

On behalf of the San Angelo Symphony, I want to thank all of our concert patrons, guest artist sponsors, corporate partners, program advertisers and subscribers.  Because of your continued support, San Angelo's rich history of beautiful music continues to shine brightly.

Sincerely,

Janie DeLaney
2009-2010 President
San Angelo Symphony Board of Directors
